Maybe you missed the live announcement on TV this morning, but papal observers will want to note: the two men playing two popes were both nominated for the Academy Award today.

Best Actor: Jonathan Pryce (as Pope Francis)

Best Supporting Actor: Anthony Hopkins (as Pope Benedict)

Writer Anthony McCarten also picked up a nod for Best Adapted Screenplay.

Make of this what you will. I suspect this is the first time two men from one film have been nominated for playing two popes — and certainly the first time both of the characters are still living.
