I’m leading a retreat for deacons this weekend in bucolic Lafayette, Indiana — surrounded by (parched) cornfields and acres of open land and leafy trees that are actually beginning to turn gold. It’s autumn up north.

The retreat is taking place in a lovely retreat and conference center that was formerly the mother house for the local Sisters of St. Joseph.

In the chapel Saturday night, Bishop Timothy Doherty celebrated Mass and led the deacons in renewing the promises they made at ordination.

That included something special: promises by the wives “to continue to support your husband in his ministry as deacon for the glory of God and the good of God’s people.”

Congratulations, all! Ad multos annos!
