Happy Feast Day, deacons!

Last year, I had the privilege of leading a group of deacons and their wives on a pilgrimage to Italy during the Jubilee Year, to celebrate the Jubilee of Deacons.

A highlight: we got to visit the basilica and tomb of St. Lawrence. You can read all about that and see more pictures here.
It was a great trip.
Meanwhile, for today’s Feast of St. Lawrence, a prayer from A Deacon Prays:
St. Lawrence,
you cared for the material goods of the church,
while showing great love for those others cast aside:
the poor, the sick, the suffering, the forgotten.
These, you reminded the world, are the true treasures of the church.
Guide my thoughts and prayers and actions
so that I may treasure those others discard,
and be a servant to those in need.
Help me to see the dignity in every person I encounter —
to defend the defenseless,
give voice to the voiceless,
and seek justice for those treated unjustly.
Be with me as I seek to help the poor,
and inflame my heart with love for all God’s children.
Amen.
