‘He was a good priest and a good bishop and a man of peace.’ — Archbishop José Gomez
This afternoon, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department held a news conference to announce more details in the shooting death of Bishop David O’Connell.
The bishop was shot and killed in his home in Hacienda Heights just blocks from the St. John Vianney Catholic Church on Saturday, police said.
The suspect, identified as Carlos Medina, is the husband of O’Connell’s housekeeper and had previously done work at the house, police said.
Authorities also said that it was a deacon who discovered the bishop’s body and called 911.
Watch the press conference below and you will see a visibly shaken Archbishop Gomez fighting back tears as he remembers a man he clearly cherished.
May this servant of God rest in peace, and may God bring comfort and solace to those who grieve.
