NBC News and Noticias Telemundo will serve as the exclusive English- and Spanish-language broadcasters for Pope Leo XIV’s Concert for Peace, airing live Wednesday, July 29, at 1 p.m. ET across NBC and Telemundo. The special will also stream live on NBC News NOW and Noticias Telemundo AHORA.
The global event, taking place at Borgo Laudato Si’,part of the Pontifical Residence of Castel Gandolfo outside Rome, will feature Andrea Bocelli alongside an interfaith choir of 200 children from conflict-affected regions around the world in a concert celebrating peace and hope. Commemorating the 800th anniversary of the death of St. Francis of Assisi, the event will also feature remarks from Pope Leo XIV, an interview with Bocelli and a rare tour of Borgo Laudato Si’ and its historic gardens.
Tom Llamas, anchor and managing editor of NBC Nightly News with Tom Llamas, and Julio Vaqueiro, anchor of Noticias Telemundo, will anchor special coverage of the event from Castel Gandolfo. Llamas and Vaqueiro will each have a special encounter with Pope Leo XIV, with excerpts airing during special editions of NBC Nightly News and Noticias Telemundo live from Rome that evening.
I believe this is Pope Leo’s first interview with a U.S. television journalist.
I noted a couple years ago that Llamas is Catholic, when he talked with The New York Times and described how he spends his Sundays:
My wife and I are both Catholic, and our faith is a big part of our life. We go to church at Resurrection in Rye and will try to hit the 8:30 a.m. Mass, but if we’re dragging a little, there are a couple of other opportunities at 11:15 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. When my kids aren’t in sports, we’re going to the 5 p.m. weekend Masses on Saturdays, which are good for families because they’re a little quicker.
